Pattern camisole XVIII girl Magali

The ‘Magali’ camisole for girls aged 6 to 14, based on a pattern from the 18th century Georgian period, is an emblematic piece of clothing from that period, particularly in Provence where the boutis technique was widely used. This PDF pattern allows you to recreate a quilted or boutis bodice, known in English as a ‘jumps’ corset or supple body.

This pattern is available in several print formats, including A4, A0, and Lettre US for the English version. There are 12 pages to print for the A4 and US Letter sizes, making it easy to make this historic garment at home. The pattern is supplied with instructions in English or French, and dimensions can be taken in centimetres or inches, making it accessible to an international audience.

The term ‘boutis’ refers to quilted and sometimes embroidered textile work, a technique specific to the quilted productions of southern France. The boutis technique, also known as Marseille embroidery, was included in France's inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2019, underlining the importance of this tradition to France's heritage. The pattern for the ‘Magali’ camisole is directly inspired by the antique camisoles made from Marseilles boutis, a garment that replaced the rigid corset of the time with a supple corset with long sleeves. This type of garment was particularly practical and comfortable for children, offering the structure of a corset while allowing greater freedom of movement. As a technique, boutis added not only an aesthetic dimension with its quilted pattern, but also extra warmth and protection thanks to its quilted effect. The fabric recommended for this camisole is cotton, a traditional choice that respects the materials used in the 18th century. However, there are also simpler, non-quilted models made from wool. These more rudimentary woollen versions were also popular and more widely available, but lacked the refinement and complexity of boutis work. The camisole was generally worn over a shirt, and it was advisable to leave the lace and sleeves of the shirt showing through, adding a touch of elegance and refinement in keeping with the clothing styles of the period. Our recent model has been reconstituted in an old quilted blanket that gives the illusion of hand-knitting. Apart from Provence, similar styles of boutis camisoles were also found in other parts of Europe, although each region had its own particular style. These quilted garments were prized for their comfort. The spread of these techniques and styles testifies to the cultural influence of Provence in the 18th century, and the attraction of clothing that was both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The PDF pattern for the ‘Magali’ camisole offers a unique opportunity to recreate a historic garment using traditional techniques, while adapting to modern sewing standards, paying tribute to a craft that has survived the centuries.
