Woman's camisole or Jumps pattern 18th century Odile

A feminine wardrobe staple in the 18th century,

The pattern we are presenting today is an 18th century camisole or ‘jumpsuit’, specifically inspired by the Georgian period and Provençal traditions, particularly those of Arles. This pattern is based on an antique camisole made using the ‘Piqure de Marseille’ technique, more commonly known as ‘boutis’.

This PDF pattern is available in French or English, with instructions and measurements available in centimetres or inches, making it accessible to a wide audience. It is suitable for printing on different formats: A4, A0, and US Letter, to suit international printing preferences. The version for printing on A4 or US Letter has 15 pages.

The pattern covers a range of sizes from 34 to 48, allowing it to be adapted to a variety of body shapes. This makes it a versatile pattern for both historical sewing enthusiasts and contemporary fashion lovers wishing to recreate or draw inspiration from period garments.

Boutis: A Provençal Tradition

Boutis is a textile technique emblematic of the south of France, particularly Provence, dating back to the 18th century. The term refers to quilted productions, where patterns are created by stitching through several layers of fabric, often embroidered for a stronger effect. The skill of boutis, also known as Marseille embroidery, has been recognised for its cultural importance and included in France's inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2019.

The camisole shown in this PDF pattern uses the boutis marseillais technique to faithfully reproduce a historical piece. At the time, this technique was commonly used to make warm, functional and decorative garments worn by local women. Traditionally, these garments were made from cotton, although simpler, unquilted versions could be found in wool.

A practical and aesthetic garment

In the 18th century, the corset was an essential part of a woman's wardrobe. However, the camisole or ‘jumps’ in Marseilles boutis, often called the corset souple or ‘stays’, offered a more comfortable alternative to the hard body (the classic rigid corset). Designed to be worn over a shirt, this long-sleeved flexible corset allowed great freedom of movement while retaining the sought-after aesthetic of the time. The lace and sleeves of the shirt were often left visible to add a touch of sophistication to the ensemble.

The Camisole Beyond Provence

While this style is rooted in Provençal tradition, it is important to note that similar garments were worn throughout Europe. The supple corset was a common piece of clothing, appreciated for its comfort and practicality, while maintaining an elegant, structured silhouette.
